| Regular members | ||
| 1. | Regular members of JAF must be owners of a private car residing in Japan or equivalent. There are four types of Regular membership: | |
| (1) | Individual members - Refer to individual members. | |
| (2) | Family members - Refer to family members who live in the same household or share a living with an Individual member. Family means the relatives defined in the Civil Law. | |
| (3) | Junior members - Refers to individual members, whose age shall be 16 or 17 at the point of the admission. | |
| (4) | Corporate members - Refer to corporate or organizational members. | |
| Procedures for admission of regular membership | ||
| 2. | Admission procedures according to the type of membership shown below must be completed to become a regular member. | |
| (1) | The applicant for Individual membership must pay the joining fee and membership fee according to the prescribed procedures. | |
| (2) | The Personal member whose family will apply for Family membership must pay the membership fee according to the prescribed procedures for the admission of a Family member. Family members are exempted from joining fee. Up to five members of the family who live in the same household or share a living with the Individual member may be admitted to JAF as Family member. | |
| (3) | The applicants for Junior membership must pay the membership fee according to the prescribed procedures. Junior members are exempted from joining fee. | |
| (4) | The applicants for Corporate membership must pay the joining fee and membership fee according to the prescribed procedures which are intended for the corporate members. The applicants must register the registry number or vehicle number (hereinafter referred to as “vehicle number”) of the vehicles to be operated by the corporation, and must pay subscription fee for each vehicle in addition to the membership fee. | |
| Effective date of the qualifications of regular membership | |
| 3. | Qualifications of Regular membership will become effective when the applicant receives the relevant membership card (including a temporary membership card). |
| Issuance of membership cards | |
| 4-1. | JAF shall issue and lend a membership card with the expiration date printed on it (hereinafter referred to as “regular membership card”) to members upon admission. JAF shall issue and lend a membership card which will be used for more than one year (hereinafter referred to as “multi-year membership card”) to the following members: (1) The members who have their annual membership fee debited from an account at a bank or post office, or paid with a credit card (hereinafter referred to as “Automatic Debiting System”). (2) The members who pay the lump sum membership fee for several years of prescribed term by cash or through Automatic Debiting System. |
| 4-2. | In case of loss of a membership card, the member has to submit a report of loss to JAF. In that case, JAF shall reissue a membership card subject to the prescribed reissue fee. |
| 4-3. | A copy of JAF' s club magazine will be mailed to each member (except for Family members). |
| Validation of membership qualifications | |
| 5-1. | The sole validation for membership qualifications is membership card. Members are requested to carry their membership card at all times. |
| 5-2. | Members whose membership card has expired will not be eligible for JAF' s membership services. |
| Period of validity and expiration of membership card | |
| 6-1. | The valid term of the regular membership card is 1 year from the end of the month of the admission. In addition, the valid term of the multi-year membership card, which is provided for the membership defined by no.1 of the first paragraph in Article 4, is 5 years from the end of the month of the admission. In the meantime, the valid term of the multi-year membership card, which is provided for the membership defined by no.2 of the first paragraph in Article 4, is those years corresponding to the amount of the lump sum payment of membership fee, from the end of the month of the admission. |
| 6-2. | The expiration date of the card for Family members will be the same as that for the Individual member who has applied for the admission of the said Family member. |
| 6-3. | The valid term of the card for Junior members is 2 years from the end of the month of the admission. |
| 6-4. | In case of loss of membership qualification in accordance with Article 15 in these Regulations, the relevant member’s card shall become invalid. |
| Renewal of membership | |
| 7-1. | Those who wish to renew their membership cards must pay membership fees according to the prescribed procedures. However, it is not allowed for Junior members to renew their membership card. |
| 7-2. | Joining fees will be exempted for those who pay their membership fees not later than four months after the expiration date. JAF shall issue and lend them new membership cards valid from the expiration date. Members whose fees are in arrears will not be entitled to membership service offered by JAF until the membership fees are paid in full. |
| Temporary suspension of membership | |
| 8-1. | Personal members may discontinue the payment of membership fees for overseas assignment, medical treatments or other reasons for up to five years if they take the proper procedures in advance. Such members will not be entitled to membership services offered by JAF for the duration of discontinuance. |
| 8-2. | To resume membership, the member who has discontinued membership must pay membership fees starting from the time of the cancellation of discontinuance according to the prescribed procedures. The member will not need to pay joining fee. |
| Incidental membership fee | |
| 9. | JAF may charge its members incidental membership fees when the fees have been deemed necessary for its management and approved by its Board of Directors. |
| Participation of members in various operations | |
| 10. | Members may take part in road safety, environmental protection and other campaigns launched by JAF to enhance their know-how on traffic or to engage in activities that benefit society. |
| Members' right | ||
| 11. | Members are entitled to membership services offered by JAF during the term of validity of their membership card. | |
| (1) | Individual member whose name is printed on the membership card is entitled to JAF' s membership services for Individual member. | |
| (2) | Family member whose name is printed on the membership card is entitled to JAF' s membership services for Family member. | |
| (3) | Junior member whose name is printed on the membership card is entitled to JAF' s membership services for Junior member. | |
| (4) | Corporate member whose company name is printed on the membership card is entitled to JAF' s membership services for Corporate member. JAF' s road service will be provided only to the vehicle whose vehicle number is listed on the membership card. | |
| Members' obligations | ||
| 12. | Members are requested to observe the followings: | |
| (1) | Members must present their membership to be entitled to membership services offered by JAF. Members will be treated as nonmembers if they fail to show their membership card. | |
| (2) | Members must not hand over or lend their membership card to others. | |
| (3) | Members must promptly notify any change in their name or address to JAF. | |
| (4) | Members must promptly notify any change in the vehicle number printed on the Corporate Membership card. | |
| (5) | Members must observe traffic rules at all times and avoid acting in a way that may cause trouble to others. | |
| (6) | When receiving JAF’s road services, membership must follow the instructions or warning given by the road service patrol. | |
| Responsibilities at the time of road service | |
| 13. | JAF will not be responsible for any damage or accident resulting in injury or death caused by its road services unless the act was done intentionally or due to gross negligence on the part of JAF. |
| Procedures for the withdrawal of regular membership | |
| 14. | When regular members withdraw from their membership, they shall take the following procedures. |
| 14-1. | In case of withdrawal, the members shall submit a notice of withdrawal. |
| 14-2. | Provided the members find it difficult to go through the above procedures, they may apply via telephone or fax etc. |
| Loss of membership qualifications | ||
| 15. | Members will lose their membership qualifications in the following cases: | |
| (1) | When the member withdraws from JAF. | |
| (2) | In the event of death or corporate dissolution. | |
| (3) | When the member has not paid his/her membership fee by the prescribed deadline. | |
| (4) | When the member is dismissed from membership in accordance with JAF’s statutes. | |
| (5) | Family members lose their qualifications when the Individual member who has applied for their admission has lost his/her qualifications, or when they no longer live in the same household with the said Individual member or share a living with him/her. | |
| Loss of members' rights | |
| 16-1. | Members will be stripped of all their membership rights when they lose their membership qualifications in accordance with provisions in Article 15. Those who have lost their membership rights must return their membership card to JAF. JAF will not refund any membership fee or other fees that have been paid. |
| 16-2. | If those members who have paid their membership fees for several years apply for withdrawal during the validity of their membership, JAF, regardless of the preceding Article, will refund the membership fees for the membership years which have not yet started, after deducting the handling charge. |
| Special members | |
| 17-1. | Applicants for Special membership are recommended by JAF' s Board of Directors among organizations which support its objectives. It is assumed that the applicant has agreed to become a member of JAF. |
| 17-2. | Admission and renewal procedures of Special members are to be done by JAF secretariat. Rights and obligations of Special members will be equivalent to those of Corporate members among regular members. |
| Honorary members | |
| 18-1. | Applicants for Honorary membership are recommended by JAF's Board of Directors among individuals who have made significant contributions to JAF. It is assumed that the applicant has agreed to become a member of JAF. |
| 18-2. | Admission and renewal procedures of Honorary members are to be done by JAF secretariat. Rights and obligations of Honorary members will be equivalent to those of Individual members among regular members. |
